Indigenous cultures have been practicing community percussion for thousands of years. Feeling the rhythm of the drum and sensing the vibration of its spirit sends healing energy throughout the room. This is the essence of shamanic drumming. Although some drum circles come together to make beautiful harmony, others prefer to explore the healing aspect of drumming.
Shamanic drumming is a time-honored method of healing and helping others. Shamanic drum circles provide the opportunity for people of like mind to unite for the attainment of a shared objective. There is power in drumming alone, but that power recombines and multiplies on many simultaneous levels in a group of drummers. The drums draw individual energies together, unifying them into a consolidated force. Synchronized drumming is the most effective, so individuals should alternate the responsibility of setting the tempo and leading the group. The basic steps that I describe here I have found most effective.
According to Richard Reiter, "When communicating with words, only one person speaks at a time. But when drumming, everyone can communicate at the same time by listening carefully and responding sensitively. This can generate a joyous feeling of unity and power."
Whether you have a shaman/spirit/medicine drum or a drum from South America, Central America, Caribs, Africa and Asia, all drum medicine is welcomed. The drum circle is open to all, no experience necessary. Drums and rattles can be provided—or you can bring your own! Please reserve a spot and let us know if you will need a drum.
